Also more Quick and Dirty Reviews and another Podcast Pick of the Week. All for free because God knows you wouldn't pay for it.

Michael celebrates the 4th of July by talking about his favorite patriotic hero; Captain America. Not only does Michael foist a "special" theme on you but also pulls out some fun audio clips and explains why he likes Cap, why Captain America would kill if necessary and why the character's origin only works when set during World War II. All of this in celebration of the country's birthday or something like that.

Views From The Longbox Episode Four: The Transformers Episode

If Michael we're more of a dork than he already is this is where he would write that this episode is more than meets the eye. But since it isn't he won't. As the title suggests this is the Transformers episode, or at least the first of them. Listen as Michael discusses his early Transformers experiences, plays some music from the 1986 soundtrack and does a little compare and contrast on a song from TRANSFORMERS THE MOVIE and ROCKY IV. All this plus some quick and dirty reviews and the video podcast pick of the week.

Yeah, Michael talks about Rob Liefeld and Youngblood in this episode. But you should listen anyway because it is rather entertaining, at least to Michael. In addition to a brief little thing on Rob there is a review of sorts for TRANSFORMERS and the blog pick of the week. All this for your entertainment, or something like that.

It runs kind of long this week, but Michael thinks you should listen to it anyway. This time out Michael gives you Part One of a two part look at his favorite episode, or rather episodes, of the INCREDIBLE HULK. Thrill as Michael tells you more tales of his misspent youth and of all the neat sound samples he made. All in the name of good, clean, comic book fun.

Michael learns a valuable lesson from last week and manages to produce an episode that isn't as long as, say, the director's cut of JFK. This week finishes up the two part look at "The First: with Michael taking a good look at the second part. More clips and commentary. And it's under forty minutes, so you won't feel like shoving sharp objects in your ear to make the pain stop. Michael also apologizes for getting the episode up a day or two late this week, but real life intruded. Blame Tax Free Weekend in the great state of Georgia.

Views From The Longbox Episode Eight: The Filmation's 1960's DC Themes Episode

Michael goes back in time again this week and takes a look at the theme song from the various animated series that Filmation (you know, the HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE people) did between 1966 and 1969. While they are not as catchy as the Marvel themes of the same time period they do have some historical significance. This was the first time that characters outside of Superman were animated. Ok, that sounds like Michael is trying to justify himself and maybe he is a little bit, but listen anyway. And sorry about some of the dodgy audio towards the middle.

The Leonard Cohen music at the beginning of this episode should be a clear indication that things are going to be a little grim this week. In this episode Michael begins a three part look at why (despite still loving the form) Michael is having some problems with comic books as they are currently being published. Not as footloose and fancy free as the usual episode, but still well worth your time, attention and hard drive space. All this and an exciting announcement as well!

After a two week break Michael is back with an episode about one of his favorite places to go; the comic shop. Learn about Michael's first comic shop, the ones he has gone to since then and the current place his hold box calls home. Also you can hear about the God awful shop he visited in Nags Head, North Carolina and learn about what he likes to see in a shop. All this in the madcap Views From The Longbox manner... whatever the heck that means.

It's been a week since DragonCon and Michael plays the ghost of DragonCon past. Get all excited as Michael talks about his first DragonCon and some highlights of the years since. Also Michael pimps a bunch of other websites and talks about this year's con. Michael would have talked about this year's con a little more but he did that a few nights ago on the D-Con episode of the Unique Geek. Plus, he rambled on for thirty minutes as it is. You don't want more. Trust Michael on this one.

This week Michael finally gets around to an episode about Superman and the 15th anniversary of the character's death seems like a good direction to go in. Listen to Michael tell you about his dealings with Warner Brothers, his contract as a Superman fan and his thoughts on the year that brought us the death of Superman. Also, Michael goes on at length about how he got his copy of Superman #75. If all else fails, listen to the John Ottman music as the beginning because that's, you know, good.

In the ultimate super-hero tradition Michael teams up with a fellow comic fan this week. Listen as Michael and "The Irrideemable" Shag Matthews talk about the current state of the Big Two. Sometime crude, sometimes insightful but always entertaining this special hour long episode is for all of those who feel that maybe DC isn't really nailing it out of the park lately. Because of how the majority of this episode was recorded the sound quality is a bit dodgy at times. Also, and this is important, the language gets a little blue this week, so consider this episode not even close to work safe.

More theme song fun as Michael once again stumbles into a two-part episode, this time about the themes to comic book inspired animated series from the '90s. In part one Michael goes over the themes to Swamp Thing and several Marvel titles. Also, before that madcap fun began listen as Michael compares the theme song for The Colbys to the theme for Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

Not exactly work safe. Once again Michael teams up with the Irrideemable Shag Matthews, this time to talk about the best and worst in major comic book crossovers. Listen as Miichael and Shag talk about such crossovers as Acts of Vengeance, Invasion, Inferno, Our Worlds at War, Joker's Last Laugh, Legends and others. Sure it's an hour and a half, but it's actually entertaining much to the surprise of everyone. The audio quality this time out is a little better and as previously stated this one has language that might not be considered work safe.

It's Halloween and Michael celebrates it Views From The Longbox style, whatever that means. Michael kicks things off with a Buck Owens classic and his take on said song before discussing the Freddy and Jason comics of recent years. Then it's right into the subject for this years Halloween episode; zombies. Both Marvel Zombies and Walking Dead are covered as well as some Boom Studios zombie books. After that is some viewer mail for the first time before Michael wraps it all up. Fun. Excitement. Cheap thrills galore.

Not exactly work safe this week, so put on those headphones if you are in public. This week Michael is all in a tizzy over Spider-Man 3, which recently came out on DVD. After another installment of Out of Context Theater Michael launches into a diatribe about Spider-Man 3, which still sucks.
Not exactly work safe again this week, but that's because it's the November edition of The Mike and Shag Show. This month Mike and Shag look at some of the best comics from the mid to late eighties. Listen as they go through some of their favorite books from DC, Marvel and Eclipse Comics. Shag even participates in this week's Out of Context Theater and the Podcast Pick of the Week. The audio quality on this one is surprisingly good and Michael has worked out some other techincal issues, so despite being an hour and a half this week's installment goes down easy.

This week Brad talks a little bit more about his day job before listing his favorite Spider-Man writers and artists. Michael also laments how easier it is to be a Spider_man fan than a Superman fan, at least on a merchandising level. This one is a little over an hour, but as always since it is not Michael talking and talking and talking by himself it should be fine. This time out Michael and Brad finish up their Hulk discussion, talk about some of the other Marvel books Brad is reading, go over the DC books Brad has read over the year (all two of them), get into BRAND NEW DAY a little bit and even go through some very obscure comic related trivia. So sit back, relax and enjoy this final installment of the Mike/Douglas Show.

It is a pretty mixed bag this week as Michael is once again solo. His return to one man podcasting begins with a list of his favorite comic book couples and then goes right into a battle to the death with a plug in for his audio editing program. After that Michael gives his reasons for not renewing his contract with DC Comics as one of their Official Fans and how he may become an Official Marvel Zombie. All this and about ten minutes of reader mail. How's that for trying to get back into the swing of things?

After Michael comes clean about something he really didn't mean to do in the first place and entices you to come back to the blog this weekend for some kind of contest the fifth (is it the fifth, it's probably the fifth) installment of the Mike and Shag Show gets underway. This time Michael and Shag discuss the big events coming up in 2008 because they like to be Timely about such things. Topics include Final Crisis, Secret Invasion, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Dark Knight and other comics, movies and television series coming up this year. This has to be the best Mike and Shag Show yet especially since it is the shortest.

Friday is the 29th of February and to Michael that means two things; his birthday and Superman's. After a brief preamble Michael goes over the Superman books that came out in the month of February during the Leap Years he's been collecting them. Listen as Michael talks about Action Comics #600, Panic in the Sky, the break-up of Lois and Clark, Godfall and more. Also, Michael reads some audience feedback and announces an exciting, last minute contest. All of this because someone wanted the seasons to remain consistent. Listen and enjoy.

This one is a bit off-beat, even by Views From The Longbox standards. Michael starts the episode with a breakdown of a Meatloaf song and then things kind of go downhill from there. Topics covered include why Batman shouldn't sing, why Superman can, why MASK was a horrendous threat to the civillian population and how G.I. Joe broke new ground for comic books. Also Michael announces yet another new feature that will probably not go anywhere and reminds you of a contest that expires on March 8, 2008.

Things get back to normal this week as Michael does a pretty standard, yet interesting episode. After discussing an Alex Ross piece Michael announces the winner to his Justice League: New Frontier contest. Then Michael spends the majority of the episode discussing the actual collecting of comics because he found some book he read in the seventh grade while rearanging his bookshelf. Topics include a book called Collecting Comic Books, the Overstreet Price Guide, eBay and how much Wizard Magazine sucks. Warning, a slight occurance of profanity pops up during the Wizard discussion, but then again that was bound to happen. Michael closes the show with the first installment of Ask Mike a Question About Comics.

After receiving a rather disturbing phone call from a person who wants Michael to actually say nice things about BATMAN AND ROBIN the episode kicks off with Michael granting a listener request to discuss the Dark Knight Detective, Batman. Hear about Michael's deep, dark secret, how much he liked the Adam West series as a kid, a few second on the SUPER FRIENDS and what Batman books Michael has read, collected and liked over the years.

Starting a two part episode where Michael teams up with one of his oldest and dearest friends, Ryan Speck. Ryan is the guy who owns the site that hosts this show and as you will see he is not shy with the opinions. After a brief history of Ryan and Michael's friendship (which is based in comic books) the two start talking about Ryan's history as a collector and there is a lot of talk about the X-Men. Oh, and Ryan apparently doesn't think too highly of Brian Michael Bendis. WARNING: THIS SHOW HAS LANGUAGE THAT IS INAPPROPRIATE FOR...EVERYONE. LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

More of Ryan and Michael talking about comics. They start this "grand adventure" by discussing the pros and cons of current comic book storytelling and things kind of fall apart from there. Also there's a little digression where Michael and Ryan talk about the cinema of the nineties, but other than that it's more snarky goodness.

Another episode, another guest host. Shag's back and this time he's not taking any prisoners. Actually he's not not taking prisoners either. Frankly he's just talking about comics with Michael again. This week and next Shag and Mike discuss some of their favorite books of the nineties with this installment dealing with Marvel. Shag takes a team of heroes that turn out to be a team of villains while Michael handles a certain Star Spangled Avenger. Plus, Shag has a little bit of an announcement. All this and a very mean tag after the ending theme. WARNING: THIS SHOW HAS LANGUAGE THAT IS INAPPROPRIATE FOR...EVERYONE. LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

Last week Michael teamed up with shag and this week he teams up with...Shag. Last week was Marvel in the nineties and this week they discuss DC in the nineties. After arguing whether or not the nineties were a good time for the company Michael chides Shag on a past debate before they go over their choices. First up Michael goes over Mark Waid's run on the Flash and then Shag tackles the nineties Starman series. Fun stuff all around, which is pretty common for these two crazy guys.

Back after a week off because he was under the weather Michael discusses DC's Elseworlds as a concept as well as what many people conisder the first Elseworlds tale; Gotham By Gaslight. Before that, though, you'll hear about Michael's distrust of a certain portion of the medical community and why he likes Sebastian Bach. The show clocks in at about twenty-five minutes this time out but still manages to stay as unimpressive as ever. Also, the language is pretty tame this week, so it should be safe for work listening. Unless you think the word "ass" is profanity. Then you might want to put on the headphones.

This week kicks off a two part conversation with Editor-In-Chief of Comics Bulletin and writer/editor of the upcoming FLASH COMPANION from TwoMorrows Publishing Keith Dallas. Keith was Michael's editor back when he wrote reviews for Silver Bullet Comic Books and was nice enough to come on the show. Part 1 has Keith and Michael discussing Keith's collecting history, including a litter digression into Star Wars. Then you get to hear a preview of sorts of the FLASH COMPANION and some of Mark Waid's thoughts on the Bart Allen Flash series before they get into a kind of haphazard discussion of the Flash and his history.

After a quick apology to Van Plexico for a good later in the episode Michael continues his delayed conversation with Keith Dallas. After a bit on the late seventies history of DC Comics Michael and Keith begin talking about various eras of the Flash including Cary Bates' run and the adventures of Wally West as written by Mike Baron, William Messner-Loebs and Mark Waid. Things wrap up with some talk of the 1990/91 live action FLASH television series. Remember that Keith is the editor and head writer of the FLASH COMPANION, which will hopefully come out in July from TwoMorrows Publishing.

This week Michael flies solo again and presents an episode about the Hulk that doesn't completely suck. In expectation of the new film Michael goes over his feelings about the hype leading up to the 2003 HULK movie. Thrill as Michael goes through the merchandising, the action figures and the books that came out during that year. Michael also goes into the Hulk Encyclopedia that came out around that time and boy does he hate that book. All this and some feelings on the books and merchandise coming out this year.

Has it really been one year? Well, in a day it will be. Michael has managed to keep this podcast going for a year and the next two episodes are going to celebrate that...somehow. Shag makes a return visit to the show and after some vacation talk and about one thousand digressions the two get to the actual subject of the next two installments. It's compare and contrast time as Mike and Shag choose a bunch of subjects to discuss and those subjects include trades vs. single issues, Joe Q. vs Dan D. and Super Powers vs. Secret Wars. All in good, clean, comic book fun

The "celebration" conttinues with this second part of the one year anniversary. Michael and Shag continue their vs. conversation by discussing DC Direct vs. Marvel Legends, Who's who vs. the Marvel Handboook (or what became Who's Who vs. the Marvel Handbook), Superman/Batman vs. Worlds Finest, Man of Steel vs. Brand New Day and more. This one runs a tad longer than the first part but Michael and Shag make up for it by...well, they don't really make up for it in any form. But you get to hear two "old" men up past their bedtime and lots of swearing, so that should count for something even though it doesn't.

Michael presents his first ever pro interview. This week Views is very happy to present a conversation with Michael Eury, former edior at both DC and Dark Horse and current edior of TwoMorrows' BACK ISSUE magazine. Mr. Eury talks about how Adam West got him into comics, his time at DC, the Who's Who Binder Edition (covered last episode oddly enough), his stint at Dark Horse, his opinion of the BARB WIRE film and how Captain Action brought him back to comics publishing. The audio quality of the interview is not spectactular, but should improve if you throw on some headphones. And keep an ear out for a guest appearance by Michael Bailey's wife Rachel, who, for a variety of reasons, all justified, was a little annoyed with the host at the time.

Michael once again teams up with Brad Douglas, webmaster of the Spider-Man Crawlspace (or as Michael at one point refers to it the "Crider-Man Crawlspace") and host of the Spider-Man Crawlspace Podcast. This time out the die-hard Superman fan and the die-hard Spider-Man fan discuss their second favorite character; the Incredible Hulk. In between some really messed up digressions the two manage to spend an hour and twenty minutes discussing the Hulk television series, the various animated series and about twenty years of Hulk comics including their thoughts on Peter David's run, Planet Hulk, World War Hulk and why John Byrne's second crack at the character sucked beyond belief. All of this and a special appearance by the hokey-pokey Hulk too. A quick warning as always; the language gets a little blue, so throw those headphones on if you are at work.
