Dracula vs. King Arthur

Dracula vs King Arthur? What... are they HIGH? It seems quite retarded doesn't it? Pitting everyone's favouite vampiric lord of darkness (the Stoker version of the 15th century Vlad Tepes is the focus, not the Dracula of the 1800s) that helped launch a movement of goth kids that dance funny against King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, Camelot and all that Arthurian stuff we all know and love... which undoubtedly helped inspire SCA types the world over.

Hey, at least SCA types can make fun of goths. That's a plus.

So, yeah, Dracula vs King Arthur...

Know what? It fucking ROCKS. One of the best comic mini-series I have read in a long time. The writers, Adam and Christian Beranek, took great care in presenting Arthur Pendragon & his knights well, portraying Dracula in a way that he doesn't suck (or, uh, does suck... well, you know what I mean) and giving us a story that goes all medieval on our asses. Nice dialouge and quick, but good, character development win them high marks. The art is excellent and works great with the story. Chris Moreno has a nice way of depicting crazy, nasty violence without making it look stupid and tooooo over-the-top. It's still pretty brutal, though, so not a comic book for the little ones, parents!

I highly enjoyed reading this series and now I don't snicker when I think of the next series they did in this vein (dammit, I can't help it!): Dracula vs Capone.

What's that? Oh, yeah, you probably want a little background on DvKA... here's a tidbit from Silent Devil 's site on it:

"Vlad Tepes of the Dracul Order is in his final days. His empire is about to be overrun by an advancing Turkish Army. Vlad will certainly be killed and have his remains spread across the countryside...unless he makes a deal with Lucifer himself. He will become Dracula, the first vampire, and go back to the days of Camelot to destroy King Arthur."

And just keep in mind, kids... It isn't lame. Alright?!

It's a great take on classic yarns of good and evil and twists them together into a treat just about anyone can enjoy. So, please, do yourself a favour and check it out! There's a trade paperback out, too, which makes it even easier to get the whole story at once (plus, the TPB has 10 bonus pages or something like that).

I expected something completely ridiculous and got blown out of the water. Awesome!

This is the first thing I've ever read from Silent Devil Productions and so far I am impressed with their quality and diversity of products. Things that catch my eye: Antigone, Dracula vs Capone, Death Comes to Dillinger, Runes of Ragnan and Monkey vs Lemur. There are other titles worth investigating, as well.

Not to mention Silent Devil's webcomics.

Don't worry... I'll write up reports on some of them in the future, I'm sure!

Cheers & Grails Full of Blood,

Steve

The Boys Comic = Awesome

You ever wonder what would happen if superheroes were held accountable for their actions...? What with all the damage they cause, someone is bound to be hurt or killed. And what about those victims? Their friends? Their families?

I'm not talking about Marvel's Civil War here, folks.

What I'm nattering on aboot is The Boys, a brilliant new creation by Garth Ennis (Preacher, the man who saved the Punisher, the guy who did the best Hellblazer stories, Judge Dredd... yes, the "Emerald Isle" story with the Guiness drinking judges is his) and Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan, Fury MAX) The art is amazing and totally cinematic. And the writing... well, it's Garth Ennis, easily one of the greatest living comic writers. (click on The Boys link for more info... DO IT)

That's right. CIA paid sorts that track down superheroes (of which there are many) who need a bit of the laldy. I've been reading The Boys for the first (back-to-back released) issues , but I keep forgetting to mention it. It's one hell of a ride, though, and I cannot attach the word 'brilliant' to it enough. You have to read it... Mind ye, though, it's not for the kiddies. And yes, a character is designed to look like Simon Pegg. (that's =PURE= awesome, if you ask me)

Damn you Ennis & Robertson! More money I have to spend on your goodness.

Best line so far: "Glock's a wanker's gun, son."

Tune in next time, Nettians.

Cheers & Hookers,

Steve
